Memo to me: when planning a surprise, it’s not the “keeping the secret” part that you have to worry about, it’s letting details slip out when researching it online. DO NOT research a surprise getaway with your husband in the room and expect the secret to remain a secret.
I have been teasing Eric with plans for a surprise getaway weekend, refusing to tell him where we will go – only saying it will be like camping and we will go hiking the next day. I finally nailed down a weekend for the surprise – the 5th anniversary of when I first spotted him at MCRD. His mom is planning to come out and watch the girls, and I even agreed to book a hotel for the second night so we aren’t “sort of camping” for two nights in a row.
Well, shoot. Eric has been looking forward to finding out the surprise since last summer, and I went and spoiled it for him.
He asked about availability, so I went to the website to look it up. Then he asked how far away it was, and I read directly from the website “45 minutes to the lookout”.
I clapped my hand over my mouth the moment I said the word “lookout”, horrified at what I’d done. But the words couldn’t be retracted.
Now he knows, and it won’t be a fun surprise to drive him on forestry roads with camping gear up to the Mentone Fire Lookout.
On the bright side, now Eric can have the fun job of packing all our gear (lights, sleeping bags, etc.) and I can stick with planning what I plan best – dinner.
