Evacuees Return

29 October 2007

My dad took this photo of a water drop:

Many thanks to the family and friends who have been so concerned and supportive during the fires! My mom and siblings headed back up the mountain last night, after spending several days in Newport Beach and then in Surfside.

They were in Surfside at our cousin Pam’s house. Pam has two houses in the exclusive little community – “theirs” and “hers”. She and her husband John live in a big house next door to her little pre-marriage-to-John cottage. My family was welcomed into the cottage, and the kids had a great time taking an unplanned vacation at the beach!

The Grass Valley Fire was at 95% containment last night, with full containment expected today.

The Slide Fire (near Running Springs – about 10 miles east of Twin Peaks) is at 85% containment and expected to be fully contained tomorrow.

So far structure loss/threat stands at:

As of 8:00 pm Sunday, 200 structures remained threatened by the Grass Valley Fire and 5,500 on the Slide Fire.

- 262 Total Losses – 32 Partial Losses

Thankfully, those numbers don’t include our family’s house, even though the fire came within several streets of the house!

While the evacuation orders have been lifted for much of the mountain, we are still praying that the fires stay contained and are extinguished soon!
